250th anniversary Cromarty Harbour bottle from GlenWyvis Distillery - Charity bottling

Working with our friends at the community led GlenWyvis Distillery, the charity ‘Friends of Cromarty Harbour’ has laid down a special cask of whisky which is expected to be ready to enjoy when Cromarty Harbour celebrates its two hundred and fifty year anniversary in 2034.

Playing on Cromarty Harbour’s rich and eventful heritage, the cask will be a rum based barrel of 200 litres of GlenWyvis spirit, evoking memories of the role the harbour has played in trade, emigration and of course, not forgetting its naval role in both world wars and more recently with oil.  The outturn of the cask is expected to be around 235 bottles of cask strength GlenWyvis whisky.

To assist in repairs and renovations to the harbour, Friends of Cromarty Harbour are making ‘Harbour Angel’ shares of the spirit available for purchase today.  Known as the Harbour Angel share, supporters will be able to reserve the spirit for their bottle for £60 that will then be bottled in 2034.  This will include a generous donation to the charity. At bottling, the Angels will then pay the additional cost of bottling and taxes. At today’s prices this would be around £30.

For those that might look across at other single cask offers, you will see that the price is competitive; single cask is always typically more expensive than the big commercial outturns and blended malts.   GlenWyvis could also be thought of as a craft or boutique distillery as it only has two stills so production is relatively small. The Macallan on the otherhand has 24 stills!  Of note was that GlenWyvis recently sold a single cask 5 year old sherry cask bottling at £89.  The offer was gone in a day.

The Harbour Angel’s shares will be available on a first come first served basis, with a maximum number of shares being limited to six. The offer is strictly limited in number to 200 in total.  Orders will be accepted on a first come first serve basis.

If you'd like to reserve your bottle, please use this form to submit your request.

Update 1 - 2nd April 2024:  The cask has now been filled and put to bed.  Filled by Cromarty resident and GlenWyvis Distillery operator, Kevin.  Slightly unglamourous, like filling the car with petrol!

Update 2 - 7th April 2024: Kevin managed to take a small sample of the new make spirit that went into our cask.  Plan is to watch how this changes colour as the spirit matures and interacts with the wood.  Rum casks for maturing whisky remains fairly rare.

Update 3 - 10 April 2024: Sales are moving along nicely after just over a week, we are around half way there, so if you are thinking about it.....

Update 4 - 1 April 2026: Now two years old and undoubtedly taking on some colour; only one year to go before we have whisky in the cask. There is still availability for more subscriptions.  See us at The Hoolie.

About GlenWyvis Distillery

Nestled beneath the sprawling mass of Ben Wyvis mountain in the Scottish Highlands, GlenWyvis Distillery was established in 2015. The idea was to unite the community of Dingwall through the creation of a distillery owned by local people.

Dingwall’s last whisky distillery closed in 1926. After a 90 year absence, GlenWyvis revived the town’s lost distilling tradition, and made its own history in 2016 by running a record-breaking open share offer. More than 3,000 like-minded people invested in GlenWyvis to create the first ever 100% community-owned distillery. It was an incredible response to an extraordinary idea.

We are inspired by our beautiful landscape, and motivated to preserve it. GlenWyvis is a pioneer of sustainable distilling; wind, hydro, solar and biomass energy power our operations.
